|  | January 24, 2012 We finally have some good news about the local ice fishing for smelt at Great Bay along with news that some of the larger lakes in both Maine and New Hampshire have fishable ice, lakes that have remained open until last week’s cold snap. Also, good reports from Maine’s Mid-Coast Smelt Rental camps. But the word from just about all of our reporting sources are very wary of putting a rubber stamp on the safety of the ice, as thin ice is still around on most of the lakes and ponds and some reports of close calls and dunkings reveal the danger still possible.
