Monday, January 1, 2007 Three big events will converge on the UNH campus in Durham over the weekend of March 30-April 1. Two of these, the Seacoast Home, Garden & Flower Show at the Whittemore Center and the UNH Greenhouses Open House, are annual favorites that draw thousands of visitors to Durham each spring. At the UNH Field House, Kittery Trading Post, well-known outdoor sports specialty retailer, presents its 8th annual New England Paddlesports Show, a paddlesport tradition celebrating the start of the year" paddling season. "This is a thrill," comments Karla Ficker, co-owner of the Seacoast Home, Garden & Flower Show. "When we started the Seacoast Home, Garden & Flower Show 12 years ago, we never envisioned the growth we have experienced. Running the Home Show concurrently with UNH" Greenhouse Open House has worked well for everyone over the years, particularly as our show grew to encompass more landscapers, gardeners, and floral designers. The New England Paddlesports Show adds a third dimension to the weekend. All three venues will share free parking, free handicap-accessible shuttle services, and the amenities of spring on the UNH campus." The Seacoast Home, Garden & Flower Show fills the Whittemore Center with home and garden exhibitors, artists and artisans who offer their wares for sale, seminars, and product demonstrations. Central to the show are the landscape displays by regional landscape artists and the floral pavilion where seacoast florists unleash their creative talents. Three years ago, Ficker and her business partner, Cynthia 'Connor, introduced their Meet the Chefs cooking series at the show. "The cooking show hit the ground running," 'Connor observes. "By the second year, chefs were playing to standing room only crowds. The audiences love to learn the chefs' secrets, to watch the professionals chop, sauté, and flambé just a few feet away. And, of course, they love to sample the food at the end of the show. The chefs love it, too. They get inspired during the shows and often ask to come back the next year to try something a little different. Right now, we are building a dynamic Meet the Chefs series for the 2007 show." New England Paddlesports Show 2007 offers consumers access to the most comprehensive selection of paddling equipment, apparel and resources in the Northeast. "Paddlers of all abilities will benefit from the show" line up of exhibitors, seminars and on-the-water pool demonstrations. They'll get to listen, learn and talk with world class paddlers as well as those in the forefront of the paddling industry," stated Julie-Lynn Belon, Events Manager at Kittery Trading Post. The show starts Friday evening at UNH" Lundholm Gymnasium and runs through Sunday afternoon. The Annual UNH Greenhouse Open House runs Friday and Saturday only. Sponsored by the Thompson School of Applied Science, the Plant Biology Department, the Cooperative Extension, and the College of Life Science and Agriculture, the open house is free and features educational lectures, guided and self-guided tours of the greenhouses, plant sales, informative displays, and a children" scavenger hunt. The Seacoast Home, Garden & Flower Show runs three days, Friday through Sunday, with events and exhibits inside and outside the Whittemore Center. The show is endorsed by the NH State Florists Association and the New Hampshire (NHLA) and Maine (MeLNA) Landscape Associations.
