Sunday, August 5, 2007 Who doesn't love a sand castle, especially one benefiting a good cause, or two? On Sunday, August 5, visitors to Kittery or Windham, Maine will have an opportunity to see beautiful sand sculptures created by Maine resident Ed Jarrett, as part of a fundraiser to benefit Camp Sunshine and the Maine Snow and Ice Sculpting Foundation. The camp offers children with life threatening illnesses and their families a place to relax together for a week, and to take a break from the extraordinary demands placed on them on a daily basis. The year-round program is free of charge and staffed almost entirely by volunteers. The Maine Snow and Ice Sculpting Foundation's mission is to introduce the art of snow and ice sculpture to people of all ages and abilities throughout Maine and beyond. Jarrett, the current record holder of the Guinness World Record for the &ldquot;Tallest Sand Castle&rdquot;, and founder of the Maine Snow and Ice Sculpting Foundation, teamed up with Camp Sunshine to help raise funds by an attempt this summer to break his own record for the third time. Jarrett began construction of the primary castle at Point Sebago Resort in early July and expects to wrap it up Labor Day Weekend. Thanks to help from presenting sponsor Hancock Lumber, and other sponsors like Kittery Trading Post, funds are being raised to help support the camp and the snow and ice sculpting foundation. Additional funds are also being raised by visitors to www.onegrainofsand.org who pledge $1.00 for a pound of sand. &ldquot; The success of this fundraiser will be achieved through collaboration with Hancock Lumber, Point Sebago Resort, and Kittery Trading Post, and various other respected Maine businesses,&rdquot; said Matt Hoidal, Executive Director of Camp Sunshine. &ldquot; What's even more special about the connection between these businesses and Camp Sunshine is the fact that they are all family owned, making their understanding of the importance of Camp's family-focused program all the more real.&rdquot; &rdquot;Hancock Lumber is proud to be a part of this exciting fundraising event this summer to help benefit Camp Sunshine, an organization with whom we've had a long standing partnership. It was only natural for us to team up with the Camp once again and we are proud to help endow future families to attend Camp.&rdquot; Kevin Hancock, President & CEO Hancock Lumber. &ldquot; Its all about the kids and anything we can do as a organization, we are happy to do. We will go above and beyond to help Camp Sunshine this year, as an incentive to our customers we have even donated a Kayak package worth $1,394 for customers to win.&rdquot; states Julie-lynn Belon, Events Manager for Kittery Trading Post. Customers who purchase a paper sand castle in the store for $1.00, will be entered into the drawing to be held on Saturday, September 1st. The sculptures will be constructed at Hancock Lumber's retail location at the rotary in Windham at 409 Roosevelt Trail and at Kittery Trading Post at 301 US Route 1 in Kittery between August 2 and 3. They are a celebration of the proclamation issued by the Office of Governor John E. Baldacci announcing Sunday, August 5, 2007 as Build a Sand Castle Day in the State of Maine. Gifford's Famous Ice Cream will be served at each location, with donations also going to Camp Sunshine and the Maine Snow and Ice Sculpting Foundation. Come on out to these locations to see some neat sand carvings and to pledge your support! Please call 207-655-3800 or visit www.onegrainofsand.org for more information.
